Results:

  • Developed a lightweight, ergonomic tiered tray that enhances the efficiency of restaurant staff while minimizing physical strain.

  • Designed a balancing mechanism using natural rubber connections, ensuring stability even when moving.

  • Implemented anti-slip features to prevent plates and glasses from shifting during transport.

  • Created a modular design, allowing for easy assembly, disassembly, and cleaning.

  • Conducted real-world usability tests, receiving positive feedback from restaurant staff regarding comfort and efficiency.

  • Due to client confidentiality, detailed 2D drawings and specifications cannot be disclosed.

Process:

  • Problem Identification & Research

    • Investigated the issue of physically demanding and repetitive serving tasks in the hospitality industry.

    • Conducted interviews with restaurant staff and physiotherapists to identify pain points and ergonomic challenges.

    • Explored relevant trends, such as the increasing focus on fine dining experiences and the growing need for ergonomic solutions.

  • Concept Development

    • Formulated three potential design concepts:

      1. Portable Stacker – A handheld system for carrying stacked plates.

      2. Brace Stacker – A forearm-mounted solution to distribute weight.

      3. Harness Stacker – A wearable solution for balancing plates.

    • Used a weighted criteria system to evaluate the concepts, selecting the Portable Stacker as the most viable option.

  • Prototyping & Testing

    • Developed multiple prototypes, iterating on ergonomics and usability.

    • Conducted load-bearing tests to assess the maximum weight capacity for each design.

    • Experimented with balancing mechanisms, including gimbal-based stabilization and rubber-based shock absorption.

  • Final Design & Refinements

    • Engineered an ergonomic, tiered tray system that allows servers to transport multiple plates efficiently.

    • Integrated anti-slip rubber mats and shock-absorbing components for stability and ease of use.

    • Optimized material choices to maintain durability while reducing weight.
